Do you love songwriting and pop music? Do you love choral music as well? If you are like me, I love both of these worlds and am very excited to present a new consortium arranging my original song "Ok Again" for SATB choir. I wrote the lyrics for "Ok Again" in 2022 as a message of comfort and hope that I needed to hear myself. During stressful times, I always love hearing someone say "it will be ok". I wanted to put this feeling into my song and think it will also inspire choral singers and audiences as well. I will arrange it for SATB and Piano, maintaining a lot of the rhythmic drive and subtle dissonances while still being very accessible harmonically. Since I teach classes in and am an advocate for both Songwriting and Choral Composition, I believe it is important to bring these two worlds together more often. As part of my consortium package, I will include a 45-minute visit with each choir where I will talk about songwriting and choral music. I am happy to try to visit local Los Angeles-based choirs in person, and can also do Zoom digital visits for non-LA choirs. I hope you and your choirs can join this project combining popular songwriting styles and choral music! Ok Again (Amy Gordon - 2022)

Trying my best to believe
Trying hard to see
The light at the end of the tunnel
There’s got to be a way to get out of this trouble

It’s hard
But it’s a start
It’s dark
But there’s a spark

Tell me we’ll be
ok ok ok ok again
Tell me that we
Will find a way to find a way again

Trying my best to dream
It’s kinda hard half asleep
But there’s light from the dawn out my window
There’s got to be a way to get out of this limbo

It’s hard
But here’s my heart
It’s dark
but there’s a spark

Tell me we’ll be
ok ok ok ok ok again
Tell me that we
Will find a way to find a way again

It feels the darkest
Before the dawn
You feel the farthest
When you’re spot on
We can make it
if you say it
Need you to speak up
and say it’s
Ok ok ok ok again

Tell me we’ll be
ok ok ok ok ok again
Tell me that we
Will find a way to find a way again

Tell me we’ll be
Ok ok ok ok again (2x)

I am a composer, arranger, singer-songwriter, vocalist, and theory-lover in Los Angeles, CA. I am currently the composer-in-residence for Nova Vocal Ensemble and have been commissioned by numerous ensembles including The Los Angeles Belles, Graham Middle School Vocal Ensemble, Ramona Convent Chamber Singers, South Bay Chamber Singers, and more. I love setting poetry to music and bringing out the meaning of the text through music. In addition to composing classical and choral music, I am an active film composer and singer-songwriter. My song “One Door Opens” was named a finalist in the International SongDoor Songwriting competition. I am also a music educator and teach Bachelor-level Music Theory, Songwriting, and Music Education classes at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. I received my M.M. in Composition from California State University, Long Beach and her B.A. in Composition from Loyola Marymount University.

I commissioned a piece for my auditioned women's ensemble from Amy Gordon in the fall of 2017. During the 2017-18 school year, she and I spoke many times about the collaboration, starting with the selection of the text from a book of poetry written by students at my all-girls school. Throughout the process, I was delighted at how carefully Amy listened to my descriptions of the strengths and challenges presented by my ensemble, so that she could create a piece truly tailored to my students. Further, when Amy came to work with the students after we'd prepared the piece, her feedback for my students was kind, genuine, and helpful. I was thrilled that Amy was able to come to the world premiere of the piece at our spring concert, and so were my students! The experience was outstanding, from beginning to end, and I absolutely love the piece Amy wrote.
