Kyle Pederson is equally at home as a composer, pianist, lyricist and educator. Kyle was named the American Prize winner in Choral Composition in 2019, and has also received awards from such choral ensembles as Cerddorion (NY), Little Singers of Armenia, and the International Lutheran Youth Choir. Recent commissions have included the AMIS international high school honors choir, TAISM international high school choral festival, MN-ACDA All-State SA choir, Choral Arts Initiative, and a variety of school, church, and community choruses. Commercial recordings of Kyle’s works include New Choral Voices Volume II and III, released by Ablaze Records, and KC VITAs Chamber Choir.
Kyle earned his MFA in music composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MA in Education from University of St Thomas (MN), and his BA from Augustana University (SD). In additional to a variety of freelance projects, Kyle works part time in the music ministry at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, MN, where he composes and arranges music for a variety of services.
I love to write across so many styles: gospel, pop, hymnic, lush & harmonic, rhythmic, blues, whimsical--you name it! In most of my choral works, I write the text, as well. In my own experience, this allows text and music to influence each other in an iterative way throughout the compositional process.
Most of my choral works tend to blend styles. In my arrangement of "A Mighty Fortress" I re-imagine the iconic hymn with electric guitar, piano, and modern chord progressions. In "Remember the Children" I mash up a pop ballad in English with gospel blues in Swahili. I'd like to think the result is fresh, original and contributes something new to the choral landscape.
One major thread in my compositions is my desire to blur the line between sacred and secular--and to create music and lyrics that pulse with energy, grace, and hope.
As a former teacher (middle and high school social studies), and as an assistant church choral conductor/accompanist, I thoroughly enjoy working with choirs of all ages as they breathe life into my pieces. In commission/consortium work, I look forward to being as involved in your choir's experience of my music as you'd like!

A Mighty Fortress is Our God
SATB, piano, (optional) electric guitar
This arrangement is a re-imagining of Martin Luther’s iconic melody. New harmonies and ambient electric guitar accompaniment create an ancient/modern feel giving new life to this classic hymn.
Since I Laid My Burden Down
SATB with piano
Blues/Gospel mash-up of two iconic melodies: Glory, Glory Hallelujah and Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory. Rockin' piano accompaniment, and full-on fun from the first measure.
Remember the Children
SATB with piano and djembe
Mash up of pop ballad with gospel drive, and a combination of English and Swahili. An invitation to show compassion and advocate for the children (of any age!) in our midst.
O Come O Come Emmanuel
SATB choir, piano, and optional cello
This setting incorporates the iconic melody/text of the beloved Advent carol, and pairs it with a new, original chant-like melody and Latin text.
