My Style

I love to write across so many styles: gospel, pop, hymnic, lush & harmonic, rhythmic, blues, whimsical--you name it! In most of my choral works, I write the text, as well. In my own experience, this allows text and music to influence each other in an iterative way throughout the compositional process. Most of my choral works tend to blend styles. In my arrangement of "A Mighty Fortress" I re-imagine the iconic hymn with electric guitar, piano, and modern chord progressions. In "Remember the Children" I mash up a pop ballad in English with gospel blues in Swahili. I'd like to think the result is fresh, original and contributes something new to the choral landscape. One major thread in my compositions is my desire to blur the line between sacred and secular--and to create music and lyrics that pulse with energy, grace, and hope. As a former teacher (middle and high school social studies), and as an assistant church choral conductor/accompanist, I thoroughly enjoy working with choirs of all ages as they breathe life into my pieces. In commission/consortium work, I look forward to being as involved in your choir's experience of my music as you'd like!

Working with Kyle on a commissioned piece was pure joy! His vivacious, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life carries over in his creative composing for choirs. We discussed a theme for the piece and he developed a few ideas. We met and I listened. His work was magical! He introduced the composition to the choir and they loved working with him. The experience was fantastic and we are excited to work with him again on a future project.

Kyle is a collaborative partner with me in curating worship elements at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. His insight and sensibility parallel his keen musical prowess. As a composer, Kyle has expanded not only our choral repertoire, but crafted music that connects at a deep level cultivating a musical and emotional experience for our singers. One of Kyle’s assets is his ability to hear what you are saying, craft words and melody and then busy himself creating something that exceeds expectation. In addition, his openness to feedback and willingness to not take himself too seriously creates a dialogical relationship often difficult for creatives. Bottom line, we laugh a lot and Kyle’s sense of humor and love of life and music is both infectious and charming. Finally, Kyle is judicious when it comes to taking on tasks and finishing in a timely manner—with quality ingredients. Whether he is writing a liturgical element, musical response, or arranging music for one of our ensembles, his prompt nature and ability to manage multiple projects provides me confidence and certainly relieves a lot of anxiety. If you are looking for a quality composer who will motivate your singers and provide you with an memorable anthem that you will sing for many seasons, spend some time getting to know Kyle and his music.

For too long, the challenges of commissioning a song were a tough reality. But then I worked with Kyle. From collaboratively crafting lyrics with my students to facilitating rehearsals and being on stage for world premieres, Kyle has had a profound influence in the development of the choral program at my school. The experiences we’ve had with him have helped us build a unique momentum of student creativity and agency. Student compositions have arrived to a treasured normalcy at TAISM, and that is largely due to his belief in them. My singers often refer to our video conferences and practices around the piano with him as life-changing moments. And as he has successfully bridged into the publishing scene, it is exciting to see our songs by Kyle be discovered and thriving around the globe. His compositions bring lasting teaching and learning opportunities to the table. Your pianist will also thank you - for KP’s accompaniments alone have edge and voice. You and your musicians will engage in a powerful process bringing his ideas to life, and will truly move the audiences you stand in front of. If you’re looking for someone to honor a vision with care, attention, energy and unforgettable music, Consortio with Kyle. And buckle up.
